As an electric utility, we are responsible for delivering electricity across 5,000+ miles of distribution line to 18,000+ services. We are currently facing an extremely challenging time due to the recent storm that hit Western North Dakota and Eastern Montana, including our entire service area. This is unprecedented for our area and Mountrail-Williams Electric Cooperative.
Transmission systems were up within 24 hours which allowed us to assess incurred damage outside the visual damage we could see. A plan was then created to begin repairing damages to residential areas where we were able to get the most services restored the quickest.
MWEC’s entire system was down at one point and after almost six days of non-stop work we have restored 70% of our services. Upon completion of our initial assessment, there were approximately 1950 poles down and 200 miles of line. We still have many residential areas, including apartment complexes, subdivisions, trailer courts etc, where we are diligently working to get power restored and they are our priority.
We have been working extremely hard to keep our members updated and give them the best power restoration estimates we can. However, there are many factors that cause for these time frames to change. Those factors include soft ground making it difficult to get to locations, getting supplies (which may become a further issue), further equipment damage upon location arrival and more.
Now that the initial assessment has been completed, we are able to provide our members with a more detailed expectation of power restoral. This data will be updated daily each morning as it may change based on factors listed above. These estimates are based on a 95% restoration of services in each township.

UPDATE (4/26/2022 - 9:00AM)
More crews have arrived!
We are at 50% of services restored and we are working as quickly and safely as possible to get to everyone.
We are working to get at least 90% of services restored by the end of this week. Some of the more rural locations that are difficult to get to may be without power until next week.
The severity of the damage will require repairs that will take about 2-3 months. This DOES NOT mean that members will be without service for that amount of time.
For those inquiring about loss of food:
Weather-related outages (lightening, snow, ice etc) are excluded from coverage by MWEC. Please reach out to your Homeowners or Renters Insurance about coverage.
If you are not using a generator please make sure to unplug appliances and items that are not a priority. This will help alleviate damage that may be caused if there is a power surge once power is restored.

UPDATE (4/25/2022 - 9:30AM)
Last night our Transmission system was restored which has allowed us to get 90% of our substations energized. There are still some areas of our transmission system with damage and we are continuing to make needed repairs. Members who are in areas with smaller amounts of distribution line damage were able to see power restored late last night.
Crews are currently out clearing up downed lines and assessing further damage throughout our service area. More crews will be joining us to help with repairs and assessing the damage.
Currently there are 350+ poles in Mountrail and 500+ poles in Williams County down with areas that still need to be assessed. Shipments with supplies are on the way but we do have supplies available to get started on distribution repairs.
MWEC has 120+ staff with many working day and night to do jobs from answering your calls, to feeding our crews, dispatching, creating the best possible plan for power restoration and repairing the damage.
Areas with the most severe damage could be out at least through the week.
Later today we will have more information on our restoration plan.

Outage numbers are continuing to increase and are affecting a large portion of our system. Crews are now reporting downed power poles which causes extended power outages. Crews are continuing to work as quickly and safely as possible, with conditions allowing, but we are asking our members to be prepared to be without power for an extended period of time.
Conditions are not improving and as long as our crews are able they will continue work.
We have all hands on deck and are working to keep up with the calls coming in. If possible we are asking our members who have SmartHub to report your outage through that system to help alleviate wait times.
Also, if you have already reported your outage, you can watch for updates on our website through our Outage Updates page or on our Facebook page.
If you experience an outage, please call us at 800-279-2667.
You can also report an outage or check the status of your outage through SmartHub.

April 23rd Storm
With the current weather forecasted for our service area we would like to remind our members and community about how this type forecast may affect your power and our lines.
Ice + Wind = Galloping Lines and depending on the weight of the ice, members may see anything from blinking lights to full outages.
It only takes a quarter of an inch of ice on power lines before the weight can begin causing issues. Partner the ice with wind or even heavy snowfall, and the increased weight/pressure can bring down power poles causing extended outages.
Our crews are continuing to watch the weather and be best prepared for this current system.
If you experience an outage, please call us at 800-279-2667.
You can also report an outage or check the status of your outage through SmartHub.
